Born on 22nd october 1824, Sarah Bernhardt is elected by many as the most famous actress in history. There were many rumours around her because of her eccentricity, artistic qualities and continuous love affairs.
In 1882 she comes to Porto to perform at the Príncipe Real Theatre. Her arrival at Campanhã Rail Station, on 22nd April 1882 was very much expected and applauded and, because of that, the police was called to defend the actress from more enthusiastic fans during her transport on a carriage to Grande Hotel do Porto.
The actress performed “A Dama das Camélias” and a comedy called “Frou-Frou”. The success of both presentations was memorable and reverberated on the media of that period. The Ramalho Ortigão covering of the visit of the actress as well as Rafael Bordalo cartoons, stood out.
Sarah Bernardt said goodbye to Porto on April 24, departing from Campanhã. Grande Hotel do Porto highlights the actress stay by the hotel creating a suite with her name.
